1.31

請有二時，酬亦兩種。請二時者，初請說一乘根本法輪，後請說三乘枝末之教。酬亦二時者，自昔已來受請說三乘之教，今方得酬其請說一乘根本法輪。是故今明受請與昔為異，具如〈方便品〉及《智度論》初卷說也。

There are two times of requesting, and the responses are also of two kinds. As for the two times of requesting: first, requesting the preaching of the fundamental wheel of Dharma of the ekayāna; later, requesting the preaching of the branch-and-leaf teaching of the triyāna. The responses are also of two times: from the past until now, he accepted the request to preach the teaching of the triyāna; only now does he finally respond to the request to preach the fundamental wheel of Dharma of the ekayāna. Therefore, clarifying the acceptance of the request now differs from the past, fully as explained in the "Chapter on Upāya" and the first fascicle of the *Dàzhìdù lùn*.
