In establishing teachings, the concealed and the explicit must be forged from beginning to end. Now, dividing this one sūtra broadly, there are four tracks: first, concealed and not revealed; second, both revealed and concealed; third, revealed and not concealed; fourth, neither revealed nor concealed. 'Concealed and not revealed' refers to the first chapter: auspicious omens arose together and the wondrous wheel was about to turn, yet the two expedients had not been abolished and the two realities were still concealed; this is called concealed and not revealed. 'Both revealed and concealed' refers to the section starting from the 'Expedient Chapter' through the 'Dharma Teacher Chapter': it only clarifies the expedient of the vehicle and the reality of the vehicle, which is called 'revealed'; yet it still conceals the expedient of the body and the reality of the body, which is called 'concealed'. Thus the three thousand ink-drops begin to reveal the beginning of establishing affinity, while the count of sixteen still conceals the initial attainment of buddhahood. 'Revealed and not concealed' refers to the latter section of the sūtra: both of the two expedients are discarded and both of the two realities are displayed together; then the teaching has not the slightest concealment and the principle has not the finest obscurity, bringing about the twelve profound benefits and eight kinds of auspicious omens. 'Neither revealed nor concealed': borrowing the one to refute the three, when the three are removed the one is abandoned; using the long to criticize the short, when the short ceases the long is forgotten. Hence, words are exhausted and thoughts terminated: what is real and what is expedient? The original nature is tranquil and extinguished: what is revealed and what is concealed? The principle transcends words and is forced to be called the 'Wondrous Dharma'; the Dao is mysterious beyond forms and is provisionally analogized as the 'Lotus Blossom'.
