欲識會三歸一，先須知開一為三。開一為三者，昔指大乘之因說為小乘究竟之果也，今還指小乘究竟之果即是大乘之因，故名會三歸一也。

If you wish to recognize converging the three to return to the one, you must first know opening the one into three. Opening the one into three means that formerly, the cause of the Mahāyāna was indicated and spoken of as the ultimate fruit of the Hīnayāna. Now, in turn, indicating that the ultimate fruit of the Hīnayāna is itself the cause of the Mahāyāna is called converging the three to return to the one.
