The 'Dharma Master Chapter' says: 'After the Buddha's extinction, if good men or good women wish to preach this sūtra, they should abide peacefully in three dharmas: first, entering the Tathāgata's room; second, wearing the Tathāgata's robe; third, sitting on the Tathāgata's seat. Entering the Tathāgata's room is the mind of great loving-kindness and great compassion; the Tathāgata's robe is the mind of gentleness and forbearance; the Tathāgata's seat is the emptiness of all dharmas. Endowed with these three dharmas, one then preaches the Dharma for the fourfold assembly with an unflagging mind.' The Buddha handed down this wondrous model, which one should follow. Loving-kindness and compassion have the function of sheltering and covering, likened to a room; gentleness and forbearance have the function of blocking and protecting, likened to a robe; the principle of emptiness can pacify the mind, designated as a seat. Examining these three gates, they form a sequence: great compassion eliminates suffering, and great loving-kindness bestows joy, which are the grand cause of omniscient enlightenment and the original intent of propagating the Way; wishing to preach the wondrous Dharma, one should first establish this mind, and therefore the first explains entering the Tathāgata's room. Since one wishes to propagate the Way of utmost goodness in an extremely evil age, there will certainly be many obstacles and difficulties that one ought to endure, and therefore the second explains wearing the Tathāgata's robe. Even though loving-kindness and compassion cover outwardly and gentleness and forbearance pacify inwardly, if there is no empty contemplation that is open and luminous, the two practices will not be accomplished, and how could one awaken beings? Therefore, the third distinguishes sitting on the Tathāgata's seat. Internally equipped with the three minds and externally diligent in preaching the Dharma, the Way will not fail to prosper and people will not fail to benefit; therefore, it causes one to abide peacefully in the three dharmas to propagate the Lotus Sūtra.
