譬如稚子未有所知，兼為惡鬼之所嬈亂，如毀辱於父，父則生愍惻，懃加救療不起瞋心。此經既明父子之道，一切眾生觀力未成，為煩惱鬼之所嬈亂，若毀辱於佛，佛深生憐愍，以《妙法花》藥懃救治之不生瞋恨。末世法師既代佛弘經，亦應學佛和忍，若起瞋恨便與佛乖，非弘佛道矣。是故柔和忍名如來衣。

Take for example an infant who does not yet know anything and is furthermore harassed and disordered by an evil spirit. If he reviles and insults his father, the father feels pity and sorrow, diligently applies remedies, and does not give rise to anger. Since this sūtra elucidates the way of father and child, when all sentient beings, whose power of contemplation is not yet perfected, are harassed and disordered by the spirits of affliction and revile and insult the Buddha, the Buddha gives rise to profound pity, diligently treating them with the medicine of the Wonderful Lotus without giving rise to anger or resentment. Since the Dharma masters of the latter age propagate the sūtra on the Buddha's behalf, they should also emulate the Buddha's harmony and patience. If they give rise to anger and resentment, they then go against the Buddha, which is not propagating the Buddha's path. Therefore gentleness and patience are called the Tathāgata's robe.
