九者、欲顯諸菩薩念佛三昧故說是經。自昔已來未具足顯身真實真方便故，凡夫二乘及始行菩薩猶未識佛，故不解念佛亦不解禮佛，但以有所得心念佛者，便是念有所得竟不念佛，有所得心禮佛，乃是禮有所得亦不禮佛。不禮不念，則佛非彼師、彼非弟子。今既開身方便身真實，方解禮念、始名師弟子。

Ninth, it is because he wished to reveal the mindfulness-of-buddha samādhi of the bodhisattvas that he preached this sūtra. Since the past, because the reality of the body and the true expedient had not yet been fully revealed, ordinary beings, followers of the two vehicles, and newly practicing bodhisattvas did not yet recognize the Buddha, and therefore did not understand how to be mindful of the Buddha, nor did they understand how to pay homage to the Buddha. Those who are mindful of the Buddha with an acquisitive mind merely hold in mind what is acquired and ultimately are not mindful of the Buddha; paying homage to the Buddha with an acquisitive mind is merely paying homage to what is acquired and is likewise not paying homage to the Buddha. Neither paying homage nor being mindful, the Buddha is not their teacher and they are not disciples. Now, having opened the expedient of the body and the reality of the body, they first understand paying homage and mindfulness, and are initially called teacher and disciples.
