To speak provisionally: the Avataṃsaka is the fundamental wheel of the Dharma; after the Avataṃsaka and before the Lotus Sūtra is the branch teaching; and this sūtra belongs to gathering the branches back to the root. However, the Lotus Sūtra concludes a whole era of transformation and encompasses both sudden and gradual, so it fully possesses the three turnings of the wheel. Yet these three turnings of the wheel are all conventional names and marks preached for the sake of sentient beings within that which is free of names and marks; the path of quiescent cessation has never had three, nor is it not three, having no reliance whatsoever.
