The 'Bodhisattvabhūmi' states: 'A bodhisattva constantly transforms sentient beings with peaceful happiness; what is not peaceful happiness he knows as it truly is, and according to his power uses expedient means to teach them to abandon it. If there is initial suffering but later peace, even though they may be distressed and afflicted, they must be benefited—this is the bodhisattva relying on skillful means. If there is initial pleasure but later unrest, even though they may be afflicted and unwilling to give it up, through the power of expedient means he must cut it off for them. Why is this? Because later there will surely be happiness.' Now Sadāparibhūta observed that although there was initial suffering, later he would guide and transform them, causing them to enter the Path. It is like a great and skilled physician examining someone who is severely ill: he must first bring out his disease and later give medicine to cure it. It is also like a fisherman skillfully drawing fish out of a spring, or a great hunter skillfully drawing out bears. Knowing that benefit comes by way of anger, he causes them to be angry and saves them. Knowing that benefit comes by way of greed, he causes them to be greedy and saves them. Just as in converting a courtesan, one indulges her and then delivers her. The two vehicles are incapable of this, and therefore abide in non-contention; although they presently eliminate contention, they cannot ultimately eliminate the contention of others. The bodhisattva personally realizes the tathatā of non-contention, eradicates their root of contention, and ultimately also causes them to realize this true principle of non-contention. Though contention initially arises, he later causes contention to be extinguished; this is practicing the great non-contention. It is not like the minor non-contention of the present moment found in the two vehicles; hence there is no fault.
