Eulogy: The third section is coughing and snapping the fingers; the fourth section is shaking the earth. The Treatise says: 'As for coughing, it is to preach verses and cause them to be heard. Having heard the sound, they practice in accordance with reality and are not negligent.' The Treatise says: 'Snapping the fingers is to cause them to awaken, causing practitioners to awaken and make progress in cultivation.' As for 'shaking the earth,' it is to stimulate those in the ten directions who have not yet set their minds [on bodhi] to set their minds on it. Qìng (謦) is pronounced with the fanqie qu-ting; the Yupian says: 'It means coughing; it is a sound.' Kài (欬) is pronounced with the fanqie ku-ai; the Yupian says: 'It means adverse breath.'
