Eulogy: The text of the chapter is divided into four: first, the Tathāgata entrusts; second, the bodhisattvas reverently accept; third, causing the stūpa and so forth to return; fourth, the multitudes all rejoice. The first has three parts: first, empowerment through the three actions, entrusting them to practice this sūtra; second, from 'If there are sentient beings who do not believe and accept' onward, if they do not believe and accept this sūtra, causing them to practice other sūtras; third, from 'If you are able to do so' onward, concluding with an encouraging intention to repay the Buddha's kindness. The first text also has three parts: first, rubbing the crowns with his hand and entrusting it to be circulated, broadly providing benefit; next, rubbing the crowns again and entrusting it to be received and upheld, universally causing it to be heard and known; later, explaining the reason and encouraging them to expound it. This is the first. The first two sections are empowerment through body and speech; the latter section is empowerment through mental action. This is the first. 'Rubbing with his right hand' is because it displays great auspiciousness. Nāgārjuna explains: 'Other sūtras are not esoteric; only the Lotus Sūtra is esoteric, preaching that practitioners of the two vehicles become buddhas. Only great bodhisattvas can employ and practice it, just as only a great, skilled physician can employ poison.'
