Commentary: Below is adornment with merit and wisdom. Sharp faculties refer to wisdom; the rest are all subsumed under merit. Within merit there are five: (1) vocal characteristics, (2) oral characteristics, (3) nasal characteristics, (4) facial characteristics, and (5) aggregate characteristics. “For hundreds of thousands of myriads of generations” applies to all the subsequent fruits below. Oral characteristics have five: (1) breath, (2) tongue, (3) freedom from diseases of the gums, palate, and so forth, (4) teeth free from the six evils, and (5) lips free from the ten evils. “Not drawn up or shriveled” (bu qiansuo): qian means raised up, suo means shortened; it is also written with the character su. “Not coarse or rough”: having fineness and moisture. “Free from sores and pustules”: zhen is pronounced ju-ren in fanqie; sores on the lips are called zhen; another pronunciation is zhi-ren. Here we follow the former. Some write it as jin, meaning tight and tense, not sores or pustules. “Not crooked” (bu wai): the mouth is not distorted. Wai is pronounced ku-wa in fanqie.
