Commentary: These are the four miscellaneous calamities: first, punishment does not harm; second, non-humans do not harm; third, being bound in fetters is liberated; fourth, enemies and bandits do not injure. What is on the hands is called niu (杻), and what is on the feet is called xie (械), which are fetters and stocks. Wood upon the neck is called jia (枷, cangue); iron upon the neck or waist is called suo (鎖, chains). "Jian" (撿) means to apprehend and arrest. It also means to inspect and investigate. "Xi" (繫) means to imprison; "bi" (閉) means to detain and bind. The *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* says: "Just as wind does not enter what is solid, just as water does not flow upward, and just as empty space does not suffer injury, so it is with absence of karma." How could someone without guilt be unjustly subjected to the distress of imprisonment? This is stated based on not having committed anything in the present, which is called blameless, not that one did not commit anything previously. The verses on the burning house say: "A person who slanders this sūtra, if others rebel, pillage, or steal, will unjustly incur distress from such crimes." From their previous slandering of the sūtra, we know they have guilt. Within enemies and bandits not injuring, there are four parts: first, passing through a perilous place; second, exhorting them to be mindful of the name; third, complying with the instruction; fourth, liberation. The *Śūraṅgama-sūtra* states: "The Buddha told Dṛḍhamati: 'There is a medicinal tree named Eradication. When a great army battles, countless people are struck by poisoned arrows. At that time, a skilled physician takes the king of medicinal trees and uses it to smear the drum face, beating it amid the host to make a sound; countless poisoned arrows are all at once spontaneously pulled out.'" Because the buddhas and bodhisattvas abide in the power of the śūraṅgama-samādhi, if someone chants the name and is mindful of it, countless sins and defilements are spontaneously eliminated, just as a single drop of ghee can cure numerous ailments.
