10.395

來意有二：一者論云「功德勝力者，〈妙莊嚴王品〉示現。此明淨藏、淨眼持《法華經》，因圓道著，功德勝力迴邪見之父王，得當來之佛記，皆由《法華》功德之力。說彼本緣利益時會，故此品來。」二者前〈妙音品〉明華德菩薩請問妙音所得三昧，因此自得法華三昧。今妙莊嚴王即是華德，未得三昧已前為妙莊嚴，本著邪見。今明二子勸說父王，為善知識不簡怨親，以示眾人令弘此經，故此品來。

There are two purposes for its appearance: First, the Treatise says: “Superior power of merit is demonstrated in the ‘King Śubhavyūha Chapter.’ This elucidates that Vimalagarbha and Vimalanetra upheld the Lotus Sūtra, their causes were perfected and the Path manifest; through the superior power of merit, they turned around their father, the king of wrong views, so that he obtained a future prophecy of buddhahood—all due to the power of the merit of the Lotus [Sūtra]. Recounting their ancient circumstances to benefit the assembly at that time is why this chapter appears.” Second, the preceding “Gadgadasvara Chapter” explained that Bodhisattva Padmaśrī inquired about the samādhi obtained by Gadgadasvara, and through this he himself obtained the Lotus samādhi. Now, King Śubhavyūha is none other than Padmaśrī; before he had obtained this samādhi, he was Śubhavyūha, originally attached to wrong views. Now it explains how the two sons exhorted their father the king, acting as good friends (kalyāṇamitra) without discriminating between foe and kin, in order to show everyone and induce them to propagate this sūtra; hence this chapter appears.
