The Commentary says: Below is the fourth, broadly clarifying the origins. It is divided into four: first, praising the virtues of the two sons; second, explaining the buddha of that time preaching the Dharma; third, from “At that time, Vimalagarbha and Vimalanetra” onward, the two sons transforming their father; fourth, from “The king immediately entrusted the state to his younger brother” onward, leaving household life and attaining benefits. This is the first. It is divided into three: first, stating the perfection of merit and wisdom; second, separately listing the four virtues; third, listing the seven samādhis. Regarding the four virtues: First, the six perfections. Second, skillful means, of which there are twelve: caring attachment with a compassionate heart, fully understanding all conditioned factors, delighting in the wondrous wisdom of buddhas, constantly dwelling in saṃsāric transmigration without defilement, and blazing vigor—these six are internal; causing slight good to evoke boundless fruit, causing small power to encompass great wholesome roots, dispelling anger and resentment in those who hate the noble teachings, causing those abiding in intermediate states to enter, causing those who have entered to mature, and causing those who have matured to attain liberation—these six are external. Third, the four immeasurables. Fourth, the thirty-seven aids to awakening. “Purity among all samādhis” means having severed obstacles and realized reality. “Sun and constellations” means like the sun greatly dispelling, and like constellations diversely dispelling, all darkness. “Pure light” means emitting great light. “Pure color” means manifesting various wondrous colors. “Pure illumination” means illuminating the Buddha’s Dharma. “Everlasting adornment” means the attained merits never wane or cease. “Great majestic virtue” means giving rise to supernormal powers.
