Eulogy: Third, the Buddha explains the four dharmas. This has three parts: first stating them, next elucidating them, and finally concluding them. First, 'being protected and remembered by the buddhas' means that one's faculties must be mature. The Prajñāpāramitopadeśa says: 'Skillfully protecting and remembering the bodhisattvas is spoken for bodhisattvas whose faculties are mature; those whose faculties are not yet mature hear the name but do not yet attain it, while those whose faculties are mature can immediately attain both teaching and principle.' Second, 'planting wholesome roots' means that one must first cultivate together the two causes of merit and wisdom, giving rise to faculties such as faith before one can hear and so forth. Third, 'entering the group of those determined for correctness' means that one's right view is definitively fixed. Fourth, giving rise to the mind of great compassion to deliver sentient beings. The first corresponds to the path of accumulation, being able to hear and reflect; the next corresponds to the path of preparation, being able to cultivate concentration and contemplation; the next corresponds to the path of seeing, being able to realize the profound principle; and the last corresponds to the path of cultivation, being able to practice and realize. This is because they are respectively superior across these four stages. Furthermore, externally encountering the protection of buddhas, internally cultivating wholesome roots, being definitively free of slander, and possessing vast kindness and compassion all pertain to the stages prior to the [bhūmis]; only then can one attain both the teaching and the principle of the sūtra. However, according to the Yogācārabhūmi, one determined for correctness must have entered the first bhūmi. What is said here is not like that.
