10.57

贊曰：耳。長行有四：一德量，二境量，三所聞差別，四結勝。差別有七類：初十二雜起聲，次十二六對聲，次八八部聲，次三三災聲，次三惡趣聲，次二出家聲，後四聖人聲。〈菩薩地〉說「勝解行位久修菩薩，無驗呪術用皆驗」，故六根清淨必在地前凡夫上位，非於下中。

Commentary: The ear. The prose text has four parts: first, the measure of virtue; second, the measure of the cognitive sphere; third, the distinctions among what is heard; fourth, concluding the supremacy. The distinctions comprise seven classes: first, twelve randomly arising sounds; next, twelve paired sounds in six pairs; next, eight sounds of the eight classes; next, three sounds of the three calamities; next, three sounds of the evil destinies; next, two sounds of renunciation; and last, four sounds of noble persons. The 'Bodhisattvabhūmi' says: 'For long-cultivating bodhisattvas at the stage of practice based on resolute faith, spells without efficacy all become efficacious in use.' Therefore, purification of the six faculties must be at the higher stage of worldlings before the bhūmis, not at the lower or middle stages.
