Commentary: The nose. The prose text has four parts; herein are two: first, the measure of virtue; second, the measure of the cognitive sphere. Since above and below are distant, how can it know? If the faculty knows from afar, it does not reach out to grasp. The faculty is damaged, not the cognitive sphere; if it can grasp when reaching, could all fragrances possibly come to the faculty? The treatise says: 'This is the realm of wisdom, known by the nose faculty. Concentrated wisdom knows from afar, grasped relying on the nose faculty; therefore it is called smelling incense, not that the nose can truly grasp objects across a distance. Furthermore, the faculties function interchangeably; the nose even sees form, so how much more could the wisdom based on eye and ear not grasp the fragrances of the trichiliocosm? It attains provisional, apparent fragrance, not the actual substance, for allowing distance in grasping substance would destroy the nature of the cognitive sphere.'
