The Commentary says: The following six verses and a half eulogise hearing the Dharma, divided into two: the first three verses and a half eulogise hearing the four unhindered knowledges, and the latter three verses eulogise hearing the three vehicles. This is the first. The first half[-verse] is hearing the unhindered understanding of meaning; one verse is hearing the unhindered understanding of Dharma; one verse is hearing the unhindered understanding of language; and one verse is hearing the unhindered understanding of eloquence. Deep meaning is called "subtle and wondrous," and the supreme vehicle is called "foremost"; this is the unhindered understanding of meaning. The teaching being free from defilement is called "pure," and skillfully according with people's minds is called "gentle"; this is the unhindered understanding of Dharma. Tallying with the truth is called "deep and subtle," and responding to capacities is called "pleasing to hear"; wonderfully according with the various directions is called "each in their worlds"; this is the unhindered understanding of language. The various causes and conditions are the principles of phenomena, and with boundless analogies, these are all the similes and parables. Setting forth both phenomena and parables has, in brief, two meanings: first, illuminating the Buddha's Dharma; second, awakening sentient beings; this is the unhindered understanding of eloquence.
