Eulogy: These two verses praise the two wisdoms. Because meditative concentration and wisdom are complete, the fundamental and subsequent wisdoms are perfected. Within subsequent wisdom, preaching the Dharma through metaphors has four intentions: first, joyful delight in preaching the Dharma; second, transforming bodhisattvas and not transforming the two vehicles; third, destroying the ten hosts of Māra; fourth, beating the drum of the Dharma. "Beating the drum of the Dharma" means opening the provisional and revealing the real, as will be known below. Māra means "destroyer," abbreviated as mo. His name is Pāpīyān, meaning "the evil one," which was corrupted into Poxun. In the Samyuktapiṭaka, the Buddha taught that Māra's army has ten divisions, which are now stated in verse:
"Desire, sorrow, hunger, and thirst,
Craving, sleep, and fear,
Doubts, poison, fame, and gain,
Self-exaltation and looking down on others—
Such is your army.
None [in the world] can destroy it,
[Yet with] my arrow of wisdom and knife of concentration,
I crush it like casting an earthen jar into water."
Or, fundamental wisdom strikes tathatā while subsequent wisdom strikes conventional truth; preaching the Dharma resounds so that the multitude may hear. Among these six perfections, all possess the two benefits. However, while generosity only clarifies benefiting others, the later wisdom generally displays both benefits; the middle four only speak of self-benefit and omit the mention of benefiting others, though in reality it is not absent.
