Eulogy: The two verses below concern being unmoved by the eight winds and receiving beings with the three compassions. The two verses correspond respectively to these; this one is being unmoved by the eight winds. [The character] yàn (宴) is pronounced yān-jiàn in reverse cut, meaning peaceful and at rest. Some texts write it as àn (晏), yān-jiàn in reverse cut, which also means silent. The eight winds are: 1. gain, 2. decline, 3. defame, 4. praise, 5. acclaim, 6. ridicule, 7. suffering, 8. joy. Here it only mentions generating joy over four: attaining wealth, status, fame, and gain. Praising to one's face is "praise" (譽); praising behind one's back is "acclaim" (稱); pleasant gratification is "joy" (樂). Among these four, the bodhisattva does not take them as joy, because the word "venerated" penetrates the meaning throughout. Inversely, over these four kinds—decline, defame, ridicule, and suffering—they also do not give rise to grief; their body and mind are serene and their speech is calm and silent because they are free from the eight winds, as explained in the second fascicle of the Yogācārabhūmi.
