Eulogy: This one and a half verses praise the patience of enduring injury and hostility. Mistaking slight attainment for great attainment is called overweening pride. Relying on clan, physical appearance, power, cleverness, wealth, virtue, and fame, having attained superiority over others, they proceed to beat and revile them. The bodhisattva, by means of five kinds of contemplation, can endure them all: first, the notion of kinship; second, the notion of mere dharmas; third, the notion of suffering; fourth, the notion of impermanence; fifth, the notion of appropriation. The verse says:
"One should view that harmer
As kin, as mere dharmas,
As having suffering, and as impermanent,
And as an object of appropriation; therefore one should endure."
The above is a brief outline, and all is explained at length as in the Profound Eulogy; fearing verbosity, I do not state it. Chuí (捶) is pronounced zhī-lěi in reverse cut, meaning to strike. Dǎ (打) is pronounced dǐng.
