贊曰：下八百弟子成佛有二：一染因，二淨因。此初也。內妙業不純，外多貪聲譽，故號求名。論云：「汝號求名，示現知過去事故，不爾便成指斥他失。」

The commentary states: Below, the eight hundred disciples becoming buddhas has two parts: first, the defiled cause; second, the pure cause. This is the first. Internally, his wondrous karma was not pure, and externally, he was excessively greedy for reputation; therefore, he was called Seeking-Fame. The treatise says: "You were called Seeking-Fame to demonstrate your knowledge of past matters; otherwise, it would merely become pointing out another's fault."
