The Commentary says: The following three verses on seeing the buddhas are divided into three: first, seeing the pure lands; second, seeing the offerings; third, seeing the buddhas themselves. This is the first. Śākyamuni's light illuminated everything so that it was like a golden color, whereas Candrasūryapradīpa's was the color of vaiḍūrya and sphaṭika; this is because [the former] wishes to show that the Mahāyāna is pure, uniform, and venerable, hence it is solely of golden color, whereas because the myriad virtues are complete and fully equipped, it has diverse colors, mutually reflecting and manifesting each other. In Sanskrit it is called vaiḍūrya, abbreviated as liuli; it has various colors. Sphaṭika is called water-essence (crystal), also called water-jade, or white pearl; erroneously pronounced poli (pholi), with li pronounced as li-si fan. The Dazhidulun says: 'It comes forth from mountain grottos; after a thousand years, ice transforms into sphaṭika.' In the Western Regions, the land is hot and without ice—what substance would transform into it? This is simply a kind of stone, existing everywhere.
