The Eulogy says: The third section below has two parts: first, stopping [the request]; second, requesting [again]. In stopping, there are two: prose and verses. This is the first part. This is due to the withdrawal of those who lack the capacity to hear the Dharma. It was feared that those of overweening pride, having attained the fourth mundane dhyāna, would immediately consider it the fruit of an arhat, and thus give rise to slander and fall into hell, which is called “falling into a great pit.” These are all ordinary persons and thus fall into a great pit, not noble ones who are still in training (śaikṣa). The Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra states: “All noble beings know the fruits they have themselves attained, and none claim to have attained the noble fruits of higher stages through overweening pride, because they are free from wrong views and will not create further karma that leads to hell.” What the various treatises say regarding the monk of overweening pride who attained the fourth mundane dhyāna and, after death, fell into hell because he slandered liberation and gave rise to wrong views—this belongs to that very category.
