The Eulogy says: Below are four verses, comprising three parts: first, one verse in which he calls himself the eldest son to request a definitive resolution; next, a verse and a half stating that the assembly has long followed the Buddha’s instruction to request the teaching; finally, a verse and a half setting forth that both he and others will give rise to great joy upon awakening to the Dharma to request the teaching. This is the first part. The Buddha is honored among all beings—two-footed, many-footed, and footless; here he is called the “Honored among Two-Footed Beings” because among the three types, the two-footed are the most noble, as they are capable of entering the path. That is, the classes of humans and devas: the Buddha is also two-footed, hence he is called the “Honored among Two-Footed Beings.” Among the assembly of śrāvakas, Śāriputra is foremost, and is therefore called the “eldest son.”
