The Eulogy says: In the fourth section of the treatise, “the division of definitive prophecy,” this is below the third part, “accepting the prophecy.” He grants permission to gather them in and explain it for them. Therefore, the Treatise says: “‘Accepting the prophecy’ means that because Śāriputra and the others wish to receive the prophecy, as the sūtra says, ‘The Buddha told Śāriputra: “You have already requested three times; how could I not speak?”’ and so on, it is because he permits, gathers them in, and accepts them.” If following our own outline: the third section below discloses this true mark and opens that provisional gate, within which there are two parts: first, clarifying the two prophecies; later, from “the five corruptions” downward, refuting the four doubts. The two prophecies comprise two parts; in the first, “accepting the prophecy,” there are two: first, granting permission to gather them in; second, the withdrawal of the evil persons. This is the first part. The Bodhisattvabhūmi states: “Those who listen to the Dharma attend with their ears tuned, purifying and holding it in mind.” The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa also states: “The listener gazes upright like one hungry or thirsty, enters the meaning of the words with single-mindedness, and leaps with sorrowful joy upon hearing the Dharma; for such a person one may speak.” “Upright” (duān) means straight and careful. If one does not admonish their assembly to listen carefully, it is feared their minds will be unsettled and wise understanding will not arise; therefore, he commands them to listen attentively.
