The Eulogy says: Third, the swift command. When the wind startles, the chaff falls; when the frost descends, the pure survives. The Buddha granted permission to speak, thereby startling their minds, and aroused his august spiritual power to cause them to rise and depart; thus, regarding the withdrawal of the branches and leaves as a fine utterance, and because the pure and true remained, he granted permission to speak. The light, flimsy, empty, and sparse are therefore compared to branches and leaves; the earnest, heavy, firm, and solid are likened to the pure and true. “Fine” (jiā) is pronounced gǔ xié fǎn; it means good and excellent. Xié is pronounced hù jiā fǎn; southern people say xiéliǎng.
