Commentary: This is the third phrase. The treatise calls it 'accomplishment of the sign'. However, the treatise's quotation of the sūtra lacks the text from 'to speak of the essentials' down to 'the Buddha has fully accomplished', and only has the text from 'Stop' onward. The treatise says: 'Because the minds of sentient beings who are vessels of the Dharma are already satisfied, it is called the accomplishment of the sign. There are two kinds of vessels of the Dharma: first, real; second, provisional. The real are Śāriputra and the others; the provisional are those of overweening pride. For the sake of sentient beings who are real vessels of the Dharma, whose noble minds are already fulfilled, and whose minds delight in the wonderful Dharma, he proclaims a stop and manifests this sign to induce them to entreat him. What kind of Dharma is it that the Buddha now proclaims a stop and says there is no need to speak of? For the sake of sentient beings who are provisional vessels of the Dharma, who personally think their noble minds are already satisfied, whose minds do not delight in the Dharma, and who sit in the assembly without leaving, he proclaims a stop and manifests this sign to induce them to rise and leave, [thinking:] "The liberation of all phenomena has already been attained by me; what further Dharma is there, that he stops and will not speak of it?" Therefore it is called a "sign". It is like when worldly people gather in one place, and there are times when some delight in hearing and some do not delight in hearing words: one can say "Stop, there is no need to speak; what benefit is there in speaking of it?", prompting those who delight to request talk and those who do not delight to rise and leave. Now, for the sake of the former real ones, to induce them to inquire and seize the Single Vehicle, it is therefore called a "sign".'
