The Eulogy states: The second main section below concerns the four assemblies being astonished and doubtful, which prompts Śāriputra's request. There are three requests, and the Buddha also stops him three times; the stoppages are all placed first, and the requests are all placed after. The *Treatise* explains the three stoppages, saying: 'The first stoppage is to create a mark, causing them to inquire and seize upon the Single Vehicle; the second stoppage is to cause the great assembly to search out the profound sphere, thirsting and yearning to hear it; the third stoppage is to cause malicious people to withdraw; this will be known below.' Moreover, among the three requests, first he requests on behalf of the doubts of himself and others; next he requests by explaining that the great assembly has already planted causes under other buddhas; finally he requests by describing that he and others have already received the teaching from the present Buddha and are capable of hearing it. Within the five sections of the *Treatise*, from here below is the third, the section on the great assembly determining their doubts: they generate certainty regarding their own realization, and doubts then arise regarding what the Buddha has said. If we follow the astonishment and doubt that prompts Śāriputra's request, since there are three requests, the text follows three sections: the first stoppage belongs to the preceding proclamation of the Single Vehicle, while the second stoppage is subsumed within this request passage. The first request has two parts: first, the doubt of the great assembly; second, Śāriputra's request. The *Treatise* says that the third section on determining doubts has three parts, stating: 'From here below, it is demonstrated based on three meanings: first, the meaning of certainty; second, the meaning of doubt; third, the meaning of what the doubt is based upon.' The first two meanings are in the doubt of the great assembly; the meaning of what the doubt is based upon is in Śāriputra's doubt. The doubt of the great assembly has two parts: first, indicating the doubting assembly; second, expressing the meaning of the doubt. This is the first.
