3.85

贊曰：下申疑意，有二：初牒所疑緣由，後正申定疑。此牒佛前所說疑緣由。佛所得法甚深難解者，牒佛前說諸佛智慧甚深無量；有所言說意趣難知者，牒佛前說其智慧門難解難入。此二深故，二乘不知。初是顯上，後是接下，合名方便。何故佛歎？此為疑意。

The Eulogy states: Below, expressing the meaning of the doubt has two parts: first, citing the reasons for what is doubted; second, formally stating the determined doubt. This cites the reasons for the doubt regarding what the Buddha previously spoke. That the Dharma attained by the Buddha is profound and difficult to understand cites the Buddha's previous statement that the wisdom of the buddhas is profound and immeasurable. That what is spoken has an import difficult to know cites the Buddha's previous statement that their gateway of wisdom is difficult to understand and difficult to enter. Because of these two profundities, the two vehicles do not know. The first reveals what came before, and the second connects to what follows; together they are called expedient means. Why did the Buddha praise them? This is the meaning of the doubt.
