The Eulogy says: The following five verses on awakening contain three parts: one and a half verses reveal equality, two and a half verses reveal superior virtues, and one verse causes awakening. This is the first. 'The unsurpassed Path' is because correct wisdom is superior; 'the unsurpassed Great Vehicle' is because true principle is superior. The single word 'unsurpassed' runs through both places. Both are equal, without subject and object of grasping, having no distinction between self and other, matter and self. Moreover, 'the Great Vehicle' is itself the unsurpassed Path, because its operation and application are superior. Since the Buddha has realized this equal principle and wisdom, how could there be any distinction between self and other, or matter and self? If inner wisdom were not equal and he took the Great Vehicle for himself, while outer wisdom were not equal and he made others take the small, he would fall into stinginess regarding the Dharma. With desires for fame and gain not yet exhausted, how could he be said to have realized the Great Vehicle of correct awakening that broadly carries all? This would be impermissible.
