The Eulogy says: The following twenty verses praise [practices] after the Buddha's parinirvāṇa, divided into five [parts]: one verse on the compassionate mind; four and a half verses on building stūpas; six and a half verses on making images; seven verses on making offerings; and one verse on reciting the Buddha's name. This is the first. One who is good yet unyielding is not a bodhisattva; one whose mind is pliant but not good is also not a bodhisattva. It must be both good and pliant to be the mind of a bodhisattva, because in conforming with principle and benefiting sentient beings, it is exceedingly gentle and harmonious. "Have already attained the Buddha Path" means that they have planted the causes of buddhahood. The subsequent text is provisionally based on practices after the Buddha's parinirvāṇa because afterwards they are difficult to perform and are specific practices; it does not mean that performing these various practices while the Buddha is present is not a cause of buddhahood, but rather that while he is present they are easy to cultivate. According to the above six perfections, practices performed after the Buddha's parinirvāṇa, being comprehensive practices, likewise lead to the attainment of the Buddha Path.
