The Eulogy says: In the one hundred and twenty-one verses below, the last three verses enter the fourth section of the chapter, urging the arousal of a joyful mind to let them know they will become buddhas. That is to say, the initial one hundred and eighteen verses versify the third [section] of the preceding prose, 'opening this real mark and revealing that expedient gate,' which is divided into two: the first one hundred and fifteen verses versify the previous two prophecies; the latter three verses versify the refutation of the four doubts. In the first [part] there are again two: the first four verses versify the evil persons withdrawing from their seats during the receiving of prophecy; the latter one hundred and eleven verses versify the granting of prophecy. Among the four, the first single verse versifies excessive pride; the latter three verses versify the gravity of the roots of sin. The four verses correspond respectively to pride, violation, concealment, and obstruction; this [first] verse is pride. For renunciants, realization of the path comes first; when having attained little, they claim to have attained much, and having attained much, they give rise to excessive pride. Laymen mostly grasp onto a self and rely on a haughty mind, and therefore give rise to self-pride. Laywomen mostly give rise to the pride of inferiority, lacking reliance on the supreme path; having little grasping onto a self, they follow along with their husbands and friends and also harbor disbelief.
