Eulogy: The six and a half verses below are divided into four parts: the first two verses reveal the past explanation of the small and the present revelation of the great; one and a half verses praise the excellence and wondrousness of the Dharma and rejoice; two verses cite others to elucidate one's own attainment of Buddhahood and arouse joy; and one verse dedicates merit. This is the first part. As for 'five aggregates' (五眾), the Sanskrit is pañca-skandha, translated here as the five aggregates (五蘊); because they possess eleven kinds of meanings of accumulation, they are called skandha. Here they are called zhong (眾); zhong means 'gathering', or some say 'five obscurations' (五陰), both of which deviate from the correct designation. The Four Noble Truths are distinguished according to the doctrine of the five aggregates among the three categories [of aggregates, bases, and elements], so we know this was the initial provisional teaching. Now in this assembly, the provisional is abandoned in favor of the real, and regarding this difficult-to-understand Dharma, it says 'few are able to believe,' because the provisional and real are mutually contradictory and the Dharma is profound and abstruse. According to the Great Prajñā[-pāramitā], at the first turning of the Dharma wheel the three vehicles entered the path; here, based on external appearances, only the śrāvakas were liberated, hence it mentions the 'five aggregates' to explain the provisional Dharma. 'Profound and abstruse' refers to the secret storehouse, wondrous because of the Great Vehicle.
