Eulogy: This is disasters arising from all directions. Pervading the five aggregates is called "all around." Arising together in every moment is called "simultaneously." Arising without a cause is called "suddenly." Afflictions arising along with them is called "the fire broke out." Causing the five aggregates to become defiled, impure, suffering, impermanent, and non-self, and universally destroying the five aggregates, is called "burning down the house." "Suddenly" (chuan) has the pronunciation xu-wu in fanqie, the appearance of bursting forth violently. The Yupian says: "Chuan means suddenly." The Cangjie pian says it means erupting abruptly. The meaning here is that universally taking the five aggregates as objects, afflictions arise without cause from thought-moment to thought-moment; intensified by afflictions and bound by afflictions, the body of five aggregates becomes impure, suffering, impermanent, and non-self, burning both the general and the particular; hence it says "burning down the house." The word "house" already subsumes the halls, pavilions, and so forth completely. Just as a fire disaster can arise because of a house, and because of the fire disaster the house is destroyed in turn, mutually causing one another and mutually intensifying, so too based on the five aggregates afflictions arise, and based on afflictions the five aggregates increase; their mutual causation is just like this. Alternatively, birth, old age, sickness, and death are all pervaded by afflictions, and hence this is used as a metaphor.
