Eulogy: This is the children roaming and dwelling there. Although the sentient beings of the five destinies are all children of the Buddha—because he regards sentient beings equally without partiality in his love—yet ordinary beings are like adopted foster children. If one possesses the untainted seeds of the Three Vehicles that can inherit the father's position, whether legitimately born or born of a concubine, only then is one called a true child; hence it speaks only of three, not of four or five. Based on the Chapter on the Worthy Leader in the Avataṃsaka, ten illustrates the bodhisattvas, twenty illustrates the pratyekabuddhas, and thirty illustrates the śrāvakas, each cultivating the ten dharmic practices of their own vehicle subsumed under the three wisdoms, along with the ten paths of karma supporting the untainted seeds, only after which the fruit is perfected; therefore it says "perhaps ten, twenty, or even thirty." Because they possess the distinction of having one lineage, two lineages, or three lineages, they are named ten, twenty, and thirty. In this sūtra, because faculties and lineages are received, each cultivates the ten dharmic practices according to their own vehicle to support their spiritual lineage; thus the name "ten" is established. The previous seeds of the five destinies conform to the fundamental consciousness, so they are called "living inside"; the three untainted seeds are provisionally lodged in reliance upon the fundamental consciousness, so they are called "inside this house."
