贊曰：念示眾苦密說大乘。「為」音榮危反，敷也施也。又榮偽反，助也因也。南人多平，敷陳害事；此人多去，先雖火害因彼助說。「怖畏事」者，蟲鬼叢雜舍已燒等。密說大乘者，念試速出，雖知彼類不能信學大乘理、行為今證因，故思密說。

Commentary: Considering the manifestation of various sufferings to secretly expound the Mahāyāna. / 'For' (wei 為) is pronounced with the fanqie rong-wei [wéi], meaning to display or bestow. Alternatively, it is pronounced with the fanqie rong-wei [wèi], meaning to assist or because of. People of the south mostly use the level tone, setting forth the harmful events; people here mostly use the falling tone, meaning that although there was previously the harm of fire, he used that as an occasion to assist in expounding. / 'Terrifying matters' refers to the swarming of insects and ghosts, the house already burning, and so forth. / Regarding secretly expounding the Mahāyāna: he thought of testing them to escape quickly; although he knew that such beings could not faithfully practice the principle and conduct of the Mahāyāna as the present cause of realization, he therefore contemplated secretly expounding it.
