The Commentary states: This refers to not being alarmed or disgusted. "Alarmed" means shocked; "afraid" means terrified. They are not alarmed by the destruction of the house—the peril and suffering of the five aggregates; they are not afraid of being burned by fire—the scorching and boiling of the afflictions. They have no mind at all to escape suffering or desire to become buddhas, nor do they recognize that afflictions are the fire burning their bodies, nor do they know that the five aggregates are the house of birth and death, nor do they realize that being oppressed by all sufferings and perpetually lacking the noble path is a loss to themselves. "Loss" refers to being tormented by afflictions and oppressed by all sufferings, thus lacking the functioning of the noble path. Just as when burned by fire, when buildings decay and are ruined, the harm and affliction caused by losing property and the like is called "loss." As for "therefore running east and west," east metaphorically represents the wholesome destinies and west represents the unwholesome destinies; because the superior and inferior are distinct, they are called east and west. Transmigrating through the five destinies and indulging in the four modes of birth, although they see the Buddha and hear the Dharma, they have no intention of seeking to become buddhas; therefore it is said that they merely run and play, looking at their father.
