The Commentary states: The following text is the fourth part: the metaphor of properly expounding the three vehicles. It has two parts: first, knowing the capacities; second, properly expounding. This is the first part. Regarding "knowing that the children's prior inclinations each had what they favored," the lineages of the three vehicles differ according to their capacities; the teaching appropriate for each to hear is the individual-adaptation siddhānta (pratyātma-siddhānta). "Knowing their prior inclinations" refers to the superiority or inferiority of their faculties, which is known by the power of knowing faculties and the power of knowing inclinations. "Knowing what each favored in terms of various rare toys" refers to the dharmas of all the merits of their respective fruits, which is known by the power of knowing the paths leading everywhere. "Rare" means precious; "toy" means to play with, to favor, to amuse oneself with. Some write it with the characters for "practicing and indulging in," but both are incorrect. That which transcends the contaminated is called an "extraordinary object"; whatever is obtained will certainly be treasured, hence it says "attached."
