Commentary: Below explains the adornments, which are ten; here there are four: first, shape and measure; second, ornate adornment; third, control and restraint; fourth, pendant bells. 'High and wide' is the shape and measure, allegorising that the substance of the Buddha's omniscience is higher than the three realms and its function is as wide as the ten directions, being capable of both illumination and transformation, pervading the Dharma realm. 'Adorned with numerous jewels' is the ornate adornment, because wisdom is the foundation for the virtues of all directions. 'Surrounded by balustrades' is the control and restraint: guarding against the exterior so that it does not enter, and restraining the interior so that it does not exit; these are the four dhāraṇīs, guarding against all evils so that they do not arise, and retaining all goods so that they do not scatter. 'Bells suspended on all four sides' are pendant bells, pervading the four modes of birth, preaching with the seven forms of eloquence to vastly rescue.'
