贊曰：第四合其年衰邁。老人之相愍念逾深故大慈大悲，所作無癈故常無懈倦，凡作皆審思量觀察，有始有終都無中癈，故務規勝法恒求善事。此中即說恩斷智德，如次配前三種長者。自他雙益表久脩因，悲智滿故。

The Commentary says: The fourth [part] matches his advanced age. The characteristic of an old person is that his pity and care are exceedingly deep, hence "great loving-kindness and great compassion"; what he undertakes is never abandoned, hence "ever without weariness or indolence"; whatever he undertakes, he deliberates upon and examines with care, having a beginning and an end without abandoning it midway, hence he attends to planning superior Dharmas and "ever seeks what is good." Herein are explained the virtues of grace, abandonment, and wisdom, corresponding respectively to the three kinds of elders mentioned before. Benefiting both oneself and others signifies the long cultivation of causes, for compassion and wisdom are fulfilled.
