The Commentary says: In the initial explanation of the Dharma there are two parts: first, explaining the Great Vehicle; second, explaining the Bodhisattva Vehicle. This is the first. "Omniscience" (sarvajñatā) is the wisdom contemplating emptiness, which is possessed in common by the three vehicles. "The Buddha's wisdom" is the wisdom contemplating phenomenal existence, which is accomplished solely by the Buddha alone. Because these two wisdoms arise from self-awakening, they are called "spontaneous wisdom"; not depending on other conditions, they are called "unmastered wisdom." Alternatively, the nature of wisdom is called spontaneous wisdom, and the aspects of wisdom are called unmastered wisdom. Seeking these insights, retinue, powers, fearlessnesses, and so forth serves as internal virtue; externally, being able to benefit sentient beings, having compassion to bestow joy and benefiting them by extracting suffering—the former is loving-kindness (maitrī) and the latter is compassion (karuṇā). Because understanding and practice are vast and broad, it is called the Great Vehicle (Mahāyāna); the name Great Vehicle has already been explained above.
