The Commentary says: Explaining the Bodhisattva Vehicle and its parable. "Bodhisattva" is a common designation for the three vehicles. If they seek this [Great Vehicle], the title "mahāsattva" is added, because they are great sentient beings; the others do not receive this title. Asanga's Prajñā[-pāramitā]-śāstra says: "Due to association with the seven kinds of great nature, the title mahāsattva is added." One who seeks wisdom is "bodhi"; one who has compassionate concern is "sattva." Within these three vehicles, there is one kind with one lineage, three kinds with two lineages, and one kind with three lineages, due to the distinctions between determined and undetermined lineages. The generating of the mind at the beginning and the attainment of the fruit at the end are undetermined: for instance, if Mahākāśyapa had not met the Buddha, he should have become a pratyekabuddha, but because he met the Buddha, he has now become a śrāvaka. Śāriputra and the others can be understood by analogy.
