The Commentary says: The section below shows causing him to return to the former and grasp the real, divided into two: first, discussing the original arising of the real intention, yet because of cultivating the provisional he forgot the real; afterward, showing causing him to recall his original mind, speaking the Lotus Sūtra to return to the origin. This is the first. "I formerly taught you to aspire to the Buddha's path" is the original arising of the real intention. "You have now completely forgotten it and thereupon consider yourself to have already attained extinction" means that because of cultivating the provisional, he forgot the real. Before realizing the fruit of a śrāvaka, one has not yet attained the undefiled knowledge of past lives (pūrvenivāsānusmṛti-jñāna). Although he trained his faculties for sixty kalpas and attained the undefiled state of a śrāvaka, what is known by his knowledge of past lives is still short-range. Therefore, you have now completely forgotten past cultivation of the Great Vehicle, and thereupon say that what you attained is true extinction, unwilling to advance in cultivation. In the entreaty of the previous fascicle, [he states that] in lifetime after lifetime he had already received transformation from the Buddha; here saying he has "forgotten" has four explanations: 1. He himself remembers cultivating the lesser under the Buddha, but completely forgot that the Buddha taught the great. 2. The Buddha states that he initially taught the Great Vehicle which is now forgotten, while Śāriputra himself remembers learning the lesser midway and following that transformation. 3. Śāriputra himself remembers, but others do not remember; this is now projected onto others, hence saying "completely forgotten." 4. Earlier it was said that due to the Buddha's empowerments he remembered, while now it discusses his own mind, hence he forgot. These also do not contradict each other.
