Commentary: Next, the third part has five and a half verses, which apply to seeing [their suffering] and devising provisional means. It is divided into three: first, three verses apply to seeing suffering and giving rise to compassion; next, one verse applies to revealing the Great [Vehicle] which they do not crave; and finally, one and a half verses apply to properly expounding the three vehicles, unthinkingly rescuing them. The first further has three: first, one verse clarifies that he himself has left the house; next, one verse clarifies that the house belongs to me; and finally, one verse clarifies his own capability. This is the first. Because he has realized nirvāṇa, he is tranquil; because he has transcended birth and death, he dwells in leisure. Always in absorption, he is profoundly free and expansive. “Dwelling peacefully in the forest,” because absorption is a grove of virtues. As a verse says: “The elephant king dwells in the wilderness, / expansive at heart and free from sorrow; / the wise person abides in the mountain forest, / leisurely enjoying tranquil joy.”
