Commentary: Versifying the foremost joy. “Day and night, for numbers of kalpas, constantly sporting” means that the three vehicles all ascend to the first bhūmi and above, and riding this Single Vehicle of omniscience, pass through two asaṃkhyeyas before reaching the stage of buddhahood. For those of the two vehicles, riding the outflow-free teaching and the vehicle with outflows, it takes one great asaṃkhyeya before they enter the first bhūmi. All such spans are collectively called “day and night, for numbers of kalpas.” Because the three kinds of mind-made bodies ride this outflow-free jeweled Single Vehicle, they go straight to the place of awakening, the stage of a buddha. The place where the paths of bodhi and nirvāṇa are gathered and generated is called the place of awakening. Alternatively, because one rides the causal vehicle of omniscience, one reaches the place of awakening of great parinirvāṇa within the buddha stage; or one reaches the place of awakening of the tathatā of the buddha fruit. This is indeed the causal vehicle which only then arrives at the fruitional vehicle. For this reason, what was stated above generally explains that teaching, principle, practice, and fruition are all the essence of the vehicle.
