Commentary: The following seven and a half verses reveal the past provisional. There are two parts: first, six verses clarify the provisional four truths; later, one and a half verses explain the place where the provisional is attained. The first text has four: two verses on the truth of suffering, one and a half verses on the truth of origination, one and a half verses on the truth of cessation, and one verse on the truth of the path. This is the first. “Deeply attached to love and desire”: the internal body that is loved and the external objects that are desired are both the truth of suffering. The first verse expounds the truth of suffering, with the intention not of abandoning conventional truth, but of entering absolute truth. The subsequent verse [states that] sentient beings rejoice, thereby entering into sagehood and attaining what was never had before. “True and real without divergence” explains that suffering is a truth, “truth” meaning real. The Sutra of the Buddha's Bequeathed Teaching says: “The Buddha taught the truth of suffering; it cannot be made into pleasure, for it is real suffering.”
