As for the aspects of the eight cold [hells]: First is the Arbuda (Blister) Naraka, where the born sentient beings are touched by extremely heavy and pervasive cold touch, so that their entire bodies shrivel and curl up like blisters. Second is the Nirarbuda (Bursting Blister) Naraka, like blisters bursting open, with pus and blood flowing out while their sores shrivel. Third, Aṭaṭa; fourth, Hahava; fifth, Huhuva: these three narakas are named after the different sounds of pain made by the suffering sentient beings. Sixth is the Utpala (Blue Lotus) Naraka, where, being touched by heavy and pervasive bitter cold touch, all parts of their bodies turn blue and bruised, their skin cracking open into five or six [splits]. Seventh is the Padma (Red Lotus) Naraka, where beyond this blue, the colour changes to red, and the skin splits into ten or more [fissures]. Eighth is the Mahāpadma (Great Red Lotus) Naraka, where their bodies become extremely crimson, and the skin splits into a hundred or more [fissures].
