The commentary: Below there are ten verses on receiving the retribution of an unfortunate human. There are two parts: the first seven verses describe evil retributions; the last three verses describe the lack of wholesome fruits. In the first part there are four: three verses on an ugly appearance, one verse on having no one to rely upon, two verses on having meager fortune, and one verse on being caught unjustly in disaster. This is the first. There are seventeen retributions: first, dullness; second, dwarfishness, 矬 being zuo-he fan, meaning short; third, ugliness, 陋 being lu-hou fan, also meaning ugly; fourth, contracted limbs, 𤼣 being li-yuan fan, the illness of hands contracted, which is the proper character and should be followed—some write 攣, which does not have this meaning, but refers to binding a hawk's claws, and since this is a disease it should be written 𤼣; fifth, lameness, 躄 being bi-yi fan, contracted hands being called 𤼣 and lame legs being called 躄—some write 癖, which is an abdominal lump and not lameness of the legs; sixth, blindness; seventh, deafness; eighth, hunchbacked, 傴 being yu-wu fan, meaning a bent back that cannot straighten; ninth, not being trusted by others; tenth, foul breath; eleventh, demonic possession; twelfth, poverty; thirteenth, baseness; fourteenth, being enslaved by others, 使 being suo-li fan; fifteenth, many illnesses; sixteenth, emaciation from wasting disease, 痟 being xiang-jiao fan, the name of a thirst disease; seventeenth, having no support or reliance, 怙 being hu-gu fan, meaning reliance. Or, separating emaciation as one, with emaciation distinguished from wasting disease, there would be eighteen. Above, one verse is the retribution of mental karma, one verse is the retribution of verbal karma, and one verse is the retribution of bodily karma. Because the mind acts as the forerunner, it induces dwarfishness, ugliness, and so forth.
