贊曰：第四段不肯脩大喻。有四：一父恒念子，二子見驚走，三父令急捉，四子遂憂惶。初文有二：初總明思念，後別明思念。此初也。「五十年」者，馳流五道。「未曾向人說如此事」者，我自昔來未曾對眾說我曾教發大乘心，今者常念望欲與之大乘財寶及一乘樂，但竊思念不彰於言，悔不早覓子教、恨子不早覓我，故名悔恨。

Eulogy: The fourth section is the metaphor of being unwilling to cultivate the Great [Vehicle]. There are four parts: first, the father constantly thinks of the son; second, the son sees him and flees in fright; third, the father orders him urgently seized; fourth, the son consequently becomes anxious and terrified. The first text has two parts: first, explaining his thoughts generally; second, explaining his thoughts specifically. This is the first. 'Fifty years' refers to wandering through the five destinies. 'Never spoke of such matters to anyone' means: from the past onward, I have never spoken before the assembly that I had once instructed him to arouse the Mahāyāna resolve; now I constantly think of wishing to bestow upon him the treasures of the Mahāyāna and the bliss of the Single Vehicle, yet I only ponder it secretly without expressing it in words; regretting not having sought out the son earlier to teach him, and lamenting that the son did not seek me earlier—hence called 'regret and grief.'
